On the 10th, the typhoon “Malia” was reported to likely land in Zhejiang within 24 hours and to move straight to the coastal areas of Zhejiang and Fujian. The Office of Flood and Drought Management started the anti-typhoon III response at 18:00 on the 9th. Coastal cities and counties (cities, prefectures) such as Wenzhou and Taizhou have been on alert.

The provincial leaders Che Jun, Yuan Jiajun, and Zheng Shanjie issued instructions respectively to require all localities and departments to focus on “preventing the strong typhoon, minimizing great risks, and relieving major disasters”, and to take action quickly to do a good job in various prevention work. The Office of Flood and Drought Management should make comprehensive deployments to minimize and avoid casualties and property losses and to maximize the secondary losses caused by disasters from the typhoon. All the departments and all the major cities and counties should attach great importance and pay close attention to the strict implementation of the responsibility system and the work plan for flood and typhoon prevention, to the comprehensive investigation of potential risks and hidden dangers, and to the enhancement of duty scheduling and disaster prevention.

According to the forecast of the Provincial Meteorological Observatory, the center of this year’s No. 8 typhoon “Malia” (a super typhoon) is on the northwest Pacific Ocean at about 640 km east of Yilan County, Taiwan Province, at 23.7 degrees north latitude and 127.9 degrees east longitude, at 5 o’clock today (10th). Its maximum wind force near the center is 16 (52 meters/sec), and the central pressure is 935 hectopascals.

It is expected that “Maria” will move to the north-west at a speed of 25-30 kilometers per hour. The intensity will not change much. And it will enter the southeastern part of the East China Sea this afternoon and land at some area between Fuqing, Fujian and Wenzhou, Zhejiang tomorrow (11th) morning. It is classified as a strong typhoon at 14~15 scale. After landing, it will continue to move to the northwest, with the intensity gradually weakening.

The Office of Flood and Drought Management indicated that the typhoon “Maria” has the characteristics of strong strength, fast speed, strong landing strength, and sufficient water vapor. Whether it lands in the province or not, its impact on our province will be considerable, with Wenzhou, Taizhou, Lishui, and other places being the key areas to defend against it. The typhoon will bring heavy rains and local heavy rains in the southeast coastal areas of our province, most likely to lead to disasters such as flash floods, mudslides, and regional floods in small mountainous areas.

At present, the work of anti-typhoon in our province has been fully carried out: the Provincial Water Resources Department has required local governments to strengthen the security and dispatching work of water conservancy projects such as reservoirs and seawalls; the Provincial Meteorological Bureau has strengthened monitoring and forecasting, and initiated emergency response to meteorological services about typhoons; the Provincial Ocean and Fisheries Bureau has issued a notice on the 6th to deploy prevention work for fishing boats, fishing ports, and aquaculture; the Provincial Department of Land and Resources has strengthened duty on emergencies and prepared for the prevention of geological disasters.
