Zhejiang Prepares to Elect Deputies to Next National and Provincial People’s Congress

Reporters learned from a meeting held on September 11 and 12 that, across Zhejiang, 21,114 deputies to county people’s congresses and 57,084 deputies to township people’s congresses had been elected from July 2016 to June 2017. The two-day meeting was about summarizing the election of county- and township-level deputies in Zhejiang and about the work on electing deputies to the forthcoming provincial people’s congress. Following legal procedures, the election was just and honest, putting into place all the electoral requirements made by the CPC Central Committee and the CPC Zhejiang Provincial Committee.
After sharing and summarizing what was done across Zhejiang regarding the election of county and township deputies, the meeting proceeded to deploy the election of deputies to the forthcoming provincial people’s congress and to the 13th national people’s congress early next year.
It was also learned that cities divided into districts and armed forces stationed in Zhejiang shall finish the election between November 21 and December 15, 2017, and their deputies to the 13th Zhejiang Provincial People’s Congress and Zhejiang deputies to the 13th National People’s Congress shall be elected in January 2018. In terms of representation, the proportion of grass-root deputies, particularly workers, farmers and professionals, will be increased over that of the 12th; the proportion of female deputies will be higher; while the proportion of deputies who are Party and governmental leaders will be lower. Of the incumbent deputies, those who have high political integrity and have delivered high performance shall be given the chance to remain in office.
