Zhejiang Improves Public Health Services for people's well-being

On July 23, the Publicity Month of National Basic Public Health Service Project was launched in Hangzhou by Zhejiang Municipal Commission of Health and Family Planning. The reporter learned that, thanks to the public health services, in recent years, the health of residents in the province has been improving continuously, and by the end of 2016, the average life expectancy of residents across the province has increased to 78.4 years.
In 2005 and 2008, Zhejiang started the basic public health services projects in rural and urban areas respectively. Since 2015, the scope of public health services arrives at a coverage of 12 categories and 46 sub-categories, including health education, vaccination, child health management, maternal health management, and elderly health management. At present, these services are provided free of charge from 1,021 township hospitals and 467 community health service centers across the province.
In recent years, basic public health service projects have covered cities and villages, which have benefited residents of the province a lot. Maternal mortality in the province fell from 7.44/100,000 in 2010 to 5.73/100,000 in 2016. The mortality rate of children under 5 years old decreased from 6.07 per thousand to 3.38 per thousand. Diabetes and hypertension control rate reached 55%. The health literacy of residents was on the rise, from 8.45% in 2008 to 20.69% in 2016, with an increase of 144.85%.
According to statistics, the total financing of the basic public health project of the province from 2012 to 2016 has reached 15.55 billion Yuan. It is worth mentioning that, with the continuous improvement of the primary-level medical and health service system, the sampling survey shows that 75.42 percent of the residents will choose to visit the primary-level medical care institutions when they feel unwell.
