Zhejiang University of Media & Communications, jointly established and jointly administered by the State Administration of Radio, Film & Television and People’s Government of Zhejiang Province, is a higher learning institution that trains personnel in radio, film and other forms of media. Currently there are two main bases in China training personnel in radio, film and other forms of media, and there has been the saying “Communication University of China in the north, Zhejiang University of Media & Communications in the south”. Since its establishment, the University has made great contributions in training a large number of professionals for TV stations and radio stations at the state, provincial, autonomous region, city and county level as well as other film and television production units.  

The University currently has 2 teaching departments, i.e. Department of Social Sciences and Humanities and Department of Physical Education, and 9 colleges, i.e. School of Journalism and Cultural Communication, School of Film & Television Art, School of Electronics and Information Engineering, School of Animation, School of Announcing & Anchoring Art, School of Management, School of International Cultures & Communication, School of Music, School of Continuing Education. It has 28 undergraduate programs including Radio and Television Journalism, Announcing and Anchoring Art, Radio and Television Directing, Radio and Television Engineering, etc. and a number of programs for students at the junior college level. With the approval of the Education Department of Zhejiang Province, the University started a “3+2” program of upgrading graduates from junior colleges to undergraduate level, which enrolls outstanding graduates from junior or vocational colleges in Zhejiang province and charges tuition fees according to public school standards, with two-year schooling. Students in this program will be issued a full-time regular undergraduate diploma after graduation and enjoy the same status as graduates from regular universities in China.

The University currently has over 9,000 full-time students and 754 faculty and staff members, of whom 55 are professors, 145 are associate professors, 7 enjoy State Council Special Allowance, 1 is included in the second level of “Zhejiang 151 Talents Project” and 17 in the third level, 22 in the Program of Financial Support for Young Teachers in Colleges and Universities in the province, 1 in the second group of “Five-One Group” Talents in publicizing and cultural field in the province, and 2 as young and middle-aged academic leaders in Zhejiang higher education institutions. At present, there are 2 key disciplines at the provincial level, i.e. Radio and Television Arts, and Radio & Television Journalism, 4 key disciplines at the University level, i.e. Applied Linguistics, Theater and Chinese Traditional Opera, Radio and Television Engineering, and Arts (TV Program Production), 6 University-level key research institutes and individual studios, such as Institute of News and Communications, Research & Development Center of Anchors, etc.. The University has 5 research institutes of or above the provincial level, including National Teaching & Research Base of Animation, Zhejiang Research Center of Communication & Cultural Industries (provincial Key Research Base of Philosophy and Social Science), Zhejiang Research Institute of Radio & Television, Media Literacy Research Center of China Radio & Television Association, and Intangible Cultural Heritage Research Base of Zhejiang Province, which helps to make the University a relatively stable base for training advanced teaching and research personnel. At present, the University has 4 key programs under construction at the provincial level, 6 key programs under construction at the University level, 5 provincial quality courses, 10 provincial projects of educational and teaching reform, and 1 second-class provincial level Teaching Achievement Award.

With distinctive features of its disciplines, the University is equipped with advanced equipment for teaching and experiment. At present, it has more than 50 laboratories such as Virtual Studio Lab, Non-linear Editing Lab, Audio-Video Lab, MIDI Production Lab, Computer Lab of Radio and Television Communications, etc. The total value of equipment for teaching is above 100 million yuan. The newly completed 22-storey studio building, with an investment of 130 million yuan, occupies a floor space of more than 30,000 square meters. It houses 17 broadcasting studios of various sizes, such as 1,200 square meters, 400 square meters, 300 square meters, 200 square meters, etc. and has become a production base for broadcasting programs, integrating the function of teaching, scientific research and social services. The University is also equipped with campus cable television, gigabit intranet, ground earth station, campus radio station and experimental station. With a floor space of 22,000 square meters, the library has a collection of 650,000 volumes of various literatures, nearly 20,000 audio and visual files, and has become the regional center of information about radio and television in China.
