Hangzhou Normal University, growing out of Hangzhou Normal College which was established in 1978 with the approval of the State Council, can be traced back to Zhejiang Normal School, founded in 1908 and renamed Zhejiang Provincial First Normal School in 1913. Since 2000, Hangzhou Institute of Education, Hangzhou Medical College merged into Hangzhou Normal College one after another to form a new Hangzhou Normal College. It was renamed Hangzhou Normal University in March, 2007. The University successfully passed the qualifications assessment of undergraduate education organized by the Ministry of Education in 2001, the evaluation of teaching quality organized by the Education Department of Zhejiang Province with good performance in 2003, and the assessment of undergraduate teaching quality organized by the Ministry of Education with excellent performance in 2007. It is a comprehensive normal university featuring in teacher education and arts education, with advantages in liberal arts and social sciences, and considerable strengths in some science subjects, and balanced development in various new disciplines.

The university covers a total area of about 1,400 mu, with a floor space of over 700,000 square meters. The new Cangqian Campus under plan will cover a total area of 3,250 mu and Xianghu Campus 558 mu. The teaching facilities of the university have a total value of 276 million yuan and the library has a collection of 2,531,200 volumes.

The university consists of nine schools, two teaching departments of basics and one state-owned independent college, Qianjiang College. There are 50 specialties for undergraduate studies in the university and it is entitled to confer master’s degree in 39 disciplines. It is also entitled to confer the degree of Master of Education and Sino-foreign Cooperative Master’s Degree in Educational Leadership with the approval of the Academic Degrees Committee of the State Council. The university has one provincial premier discipline, eight provincial key disciplines, one provincial key collegiate research base of humanities and social sciences, one provincial key base for teacher education, four state-level featured specialties, fifteen provincial key specialties, one state-level excellent course, and 21 provincial excellent courses.

The University has a number of key laboratories, such as key laboratories co-sponsored by the Ministry of Education and the provincial government, and teaching demonstration centers for fundamental courses at the provincial level. The University has undertaken many key projects, including those from National 863 Plan, Key Scientific and Technological Programs of the Nation’s “10th Five-Year Plan”, National Natural Science Funds and National Social Science Funds. The University publishes a number of academic journals and newspapers, such as Hangzhou Normal University Journal, Hangzhou Normal University News, and New Garden of Chinese Language, of which Hangzhou Normal University Journal has been included in Excellent Journals in East China, the “Nation’s Key Journals of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences”, and has been listed for three years in succession among the “Nation’s Top 100 Journals of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences.” The Journal of Hangzhou Normal University (Social Sciences Edition) was included in the National Core Chinese Periodicals in 2008.

Hangzhou Normal University has established academic relationships with more than 30 universities in the United States, United Kingdom, South Korea, Japan, Australia, the Philippines, Taiwan, etc. for cooperation and exchanges, and is entitled to enroll and train international students from different parts of the world. The University is also commissioned by National Office for Teaching Chinese as a Foreign Language (NOCFL) to train qualified teachers of Chinese and send them abroad to teach Chinese language and culture.

Keeping up and carrying forward the century-long fine tradition, and enhancing the spirit of the school motto “Be Loyal, Diligent, Truth-seeking and Creative”, all members of the University, united as one, are making concerted efforts to strive towards the objective of building the institution into a top-class comprehensive university in the province and even in China.
