Zhejiang Provincial Museum

 

    First built in 1929, it was named as "The West Lake Museum". Nowadays, known as a place surrounded with painting-like scenery, the building locates at the south foot of the Gu Mountain, beside the world-famous tourist attraction West Lake. The museum buildings take combinations of single construction and linking corridor features typical South China regional style, forming a unique pattern of "Garden in the building, Building in the garden". With meandering long-connected corridors setting off one another in the mountain and lake, the museum has already gain the fame of "the sparkling fresh sight in Heaven Hangzhou".

    Part of the museum's old location comes from the site of the Qing Dynasty Emperor's Xanadu, known as the notable bibliotheca Wenlan Hall in the South China regions. After rebuilding and enlargement in 1993, the brand-new building occupies totally 20,400 square meters, adds more than ten exhibition halls, including the Seven Thousand Years of Zhejiang, Celadon hall, Painting and Calligraphy hall, Lu Xiaguang's art museum and Chang Shuhong's art museum. These halls store 100,000 pieces of culture relics featuring world famous splendid artistic works. For instance, the lacquers and ivory products of Hemudu Culture, jade articles of Liangzhu Culture, bronzes of Yue Dynasty, celadons made in Yue Kiln, Longquan Kiln and South Song Dynasty official kiln, works of famous painters and calligraphers of Zhejiang in the Ming and Qing dynasties. 

    The provincial museum also involves the Memorial of Huang Binghong at Qixia Mountain, Memorial of Sha Menghai on Longyou Road, forming a series of notability memorials in Zhejiang. In 1999, the completion of Zhejiang West Lake Art Museum refilled vigor for Zhejiang Provincial Museum's developing.
