Yu Quyuan Memorial


  Located at the south foot of Gu Mountain, the memorial is rebuilt on the basis of late Qing Dynasty Pu Study master Yu Yue's former residence Yue Floor.

    Yu Yue (1821-1907), also known as Yin Pu or Qu Yuan, was born in Deqing, Zhejiang Province. He received Jinshi degree in 1850, and successively occupied prefect and study governor position in Henan Province. After resigning the position in government, he lectured and wrote in Suzhou and Hangzhou, made great contributions to the education industry of Zhejiang. The famous scholar Zhang Taiyan and Wu Changshuo were in his class. In 1878, his students initiated the fundraising activity for Yu Floor, and finally constructed a 2-floor fenced building with beautiful garden.

    The memorial, resumes the former architecture of Yue Floor, occupies about 350 square meters. The exhibition hall on the first floor displays documents, articles, photos, calligraphies, paintings and practicalities of Mr.Yu, depicting his life, academic achievements and his great contributions to the West Lake Culture. On the second floor, exhibition lays out the best of Mr.Yu's handwritings and calligraphies. Besides, the memorial is facilitated for visitant reception and academy communication.
